Concerned about reproductive rights in 2025? Here’s what you can do
Join the fight!
Since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, it’s been crystal clear that our reproductive rights are under attack. And the year 2025 will bring changes that include a new President of the United States, a new Congress, and new policymakers at the state and local levels too. All of this might feel scary. But here’s something you can count on: as an organization whose mission is to advance sexual and reproductive well-being for all, Power to Decide works every day to provide people with trusted information so they can access quality services, no matter what. And we won’t stop!
It’s okay if you’re feeling uncertain about the future or about your access to gender-affirming or reproductive care. Everyone processes things on their own timeline, but when you are ready, here’s a list of things you can do to prepare yourself for next year.
1. Check your state’s current abortion laws and find nearby clinics
Laws on abortion vary state-by-state, and even more might have changed due to state and local ballot initiatives that were also part of the election in November 2024. You can brush up on your state’s existing abortion laws and learn if the 2024 election affected abortion access where you live. Our AbortionFinder can also help you locate an abortion provider and get support for your abortion.
2. Refill your birth control and get emergency contraception
If you’ve been putting off refilling your prescription birth control or switching to a new method, now is a great time to get it taken care of. There’s also an over-the-counter (OTC) birth control, Opill, that you can buy without a prescription on Amazon, in grocery stores, in drugstores, and through Opill’s website.
There is also emergency contraception available over the counter, like Plan B One-Step, if you’re concerned about its future availability. Be sure to check the expiration date and store the package in a non-humid place.
3. Schedule your next physical exams soon
Start off the New Year with a head-to-toe checkup, including a general physical exam and sexual and reproductive health exam. You can find a health center where you can get care here if you don’t already have a health care provider. Knowledge is power and knowing you’re taking care of your health can only help you make plans for your future.
4. Connect and prepare with your community
In times of uncertainty, we may feel lonely, but we do not have to be alone. Now is a great time to strengthen and establish bonds with your community, because they will be the ones within arm’s reach if you need them. Get to know your neighbors if you don’t know them yet. If life has had you busy and unable to see your BFFs, try to make regular space for phone calls or meetups. Find like-minded groups such as book clubs or mutual aid organizations that you can join for support.
5. Get involved in the fight for reproductive rights
Power to Decide is here for you, and we are only one of thousands of organizations dedicated to sexual and reproductive health for all. There are so many ways to lend your voice. You can volunteer at your local reproductive health organization, support our mission with a donation, or engage with policymakers. Another thing you can do is stay on top of your reproductive health education so that you can spot and correct misinformation when you see it. Bedsider is always here with medically-accurate information on birth control methods and how to get birth control. AbortionFinder is here to help you find an abortion provider. Finally, our #AskDrRaegan series featuring our CEO Dr. Raegan McDonald-Mosley is here to help answer your questions about reproductive and sexual health. Sharing information is an important part of the fight for reproductive rights, so please share these resources with people who need them.
